Privacy Policy

Welcome to Flippin! We respect your privacy and are committed to protecting your personal information. This Privacy Policy explains what data the Flippin app collects, which service providers receive it, and the choices you have. It applies to Flippin 2.0 and later (iPhone and iPad, iOS 18.0 or later).

Information We Collect

Information you provide

• Learning profile: your native and target languages, level, learning goal, interests, weekly goal and (optionally) your name, entered during onboarding.
• Flashcards and content: cards, notes, tags, favorites, images you choose and preset or AI collections you add.
• App settings: voices, appearance (System / Light / Dark), display mode and notification times.

Microphone and speech recognition (Speak practice)

Speak practice (Premium) uses your microphone and Apple’s speech recognition to check the phrase you say. You are asked for microphone and speech recognition permission the first time you use it, and you can change this at any time in iOS Settings. Where your device supports it, recognition runs entirely on the device. Otherwise, Apple processes the audio on its servers to return the transcription, under Apple’s privacy policy. Flippin uses only the resulting text to grade your answer; it does not save, upload or share your audio or the transcription.

Information created as you study

• Study data: study sessions, answers, accuracy, mastery, difficulty, streaks and study time.

Account information (optional)

If you choose Sign in with Apple, we receive a user identifier from Apple and, if you allow it, your name and email address (which may be a private relay address). Your learning profile and progress totals (streak, total study time, cards mastered, last study date) are then stored with your account so they follow you across devices.

Usage and diagnostic data

We collect app usage events (for example, screens opened, cards created, study sessions, paywall views and purchases) and crash reports to understand how the app is used and to fix problems. We do not attach your name or email address to these events.

How We Use Your Information

• To provide core features: translation, pronunciation, study, practice and analytics.
• To sync your cards (via iCloud) and, if you sign in, your profile, progress and subscription across devices.
• To personalise AI-generated collections and AI learning-coach insights (Premium).
• To process purchases and check your Premium status.
• To send study reminders and offers you allowed through notifications.
• To measure usage, fix crashes and improve the app.

Data Storage and Security

On your device and in iCloud

Your flashcards, tags, study sessions and per-card progress are stored on your device. If your device is signed into iCloud, Apple’s iCloud (CloudKit) syncs them to your private iCloud database so they are available on your other Apple devices. We cannot access your private iCloud data. Downloaded images and cached audio stay on the device.

Firebase (only if you sign in)

If you sign in, your learning profile and progress totals are stored in Google Firebase (Firestore) under your account.

Third‑Party Services

Flippin uses the following service providers. Each receives only the data needed for the feature you use:

• Apple (iCloud / CloudKit, Translation, Speech, StoreKit, Sign in with Apple): card sync through your own iCloud account; on-device translation through Apple’s Translation framework (text stays on the device); speech recognition in Speak practice (on the device where supported, otherwise on Apple’s servers); payment processing for in-app purchases; optional sign-in.
• Google Translate: the text of a card you are translating, when on-device translation is unavailable, and the text of a card to be spoken by the free Google voices.
• Speechify (Premium voices): the text of a card to be spoken and the selected voice.
• Pexels (card images, Premium): the search term you type when looking for an image.
• OpenAI (AI features, Premium): AI requests are sent to Flippin’s own server, which forwards them to OpenAI. Depending on the feature, a request includes your prompt or card text, your language pair, level and interests, your name if you provided one, and study statistics (such as accuracy, streak and card counts). Your email address is not sent to OpenAI, and requests are made with OpenAI’s response storage turned off. AI features require signing in so your Premium status can be verified.
• Cloudflare: hosts Flippin’s AI server. It processes AI requests in transit and keeps per-account usage counters for daily limits; it does not store the content of your requests.
• RevenueCat: manages purchases and subscription status. Receives purchase receipts, an anonymous app user ID and, if you sign in, your account ID so your subscription follows you.
• Google Firebase: Authentication (optional sign-in), Firestore (profile and progress for signed-in users), Analytics (usage events), Crashlytics (crash reports and device information) and Remote Config (feature settings).

These providers process data under their own privacy policies. In‑app purchase and subscription prices depend on your App Store region; see our Terms of Use.

Your Rights and Choices

• Use without an account: signing in is optional, and you can sign out in Settings at any time.
• iCloud: turn iCloud sync for Flippin on or off in your device’s iCloud settings.
• Notifications: manage them in the app or in iOS Settings.
• Microphone and speech recognition: allow or revoke access for Flippin in iOS Settings. Everything except Speak practice works without it.
• Deleting data: delete cards in the app, or delete the app to remove local data. To delete your account data stored with Firebase, email support@flippin.app from the address linked to your account and we will remove it.
• Subscriptions: manage or cancel in your Apple ID subscription settings.

Children’s Privacy

Flippin is not intended for children under 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13.

Updates to This Policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. We will update the “Last updated” date accordingly.
